SANAA (Reuters) - Three men were killed and one was injured in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Saturday when hand grenades they had in their car exploded, officials said.
Yemen's official Saba news agency quoted a senior Interior Ministry official as saying preliminary investigations suggested there were no sabotage motives behind the incident, which occurred in the north of Sanaa.
``Investigations showed after questioning one of the injured who later died that the four men were carrying four hand grenades inside the car,'' a senior Yemeni official told Reuters.
Two of the four were killed instantly. A third died in hospital.
Illegal weapons, including assault rifles, are openly carried in Yemen. The government started a campaign in 1999 to disarm Yemenis.
A spate of bombings rocked Yemen in 1998, most of them in the southern port city of Aden. Authorities at the time arrested a number of suspects, mainly from opposition groups, but later released them.
A suicide bombing in Aden last October killed 17 U.S. sailors aboard the U.S. warship USS Cole.
